This years world Cleanup day event was sure to be a unique celebration as it came in the midst of a global pandemic which threatened nations economically and directly affecting environmental growth projects.

African Cleanup Initiative through strong support from the Cocacola foundation committed to make sure the celebration was a memorable one for every citizen regardless of distance or location.

African Cleanup Initiative powered Cleanup/Advocacy events on the 19th of September 2020 in three major hotpots of Lagos and Ibadan where you would find a lot of people out in public.
The locations Ojuelegba Lagos(Flag off venue), Lekki phase 1 community in Lagos and Agodi Gate in Ibadan Oyo state.

A total number of Two hundred and eighteen (218) volunteers were part of this project from all three locations and went out in all three venues to advocate to bus park users, shopping complexes and institutions around to take action against climate change by being environmentally responsible.

The locations covered in all three locations are:
LEKKI:(Admiralty way, Bisola Durosinmi Etti Dr, Niyi Okunubi Street).

OJUELEGBA:(Ojuelegba-Yaba Road, Ojuelegba-itire road, Bayo Shodipo Road towards Mushin), Bayo Shodipo Road towards National Stadium Surulere.

IBADAN: Kube Atenda Community Ibadan, Agodi Road (badan North Local Government Secretariat).

Four hundred and thirty six (436) individuals were reached through the advocacy campaigns accross all three locations

Note: In total 1,566kg/1.5tons of General waste and 295.3 of Recyclable waste was recovered from all three locations.

Partners Involved are: Wecyclers, Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Lagos State waste Management Authority(LAWMA), Kick Against Indiscipline(KAI), Wema Bank I-volunteers team, National Youth Council of Nigeria(NYCN), Let’s Do it Nigeria, The PUNCH Newspapers, REES Africa, Junior Chambers International UCH (Protem), ZoomIn Media, World Of Uites with Oizam (WOUWO), Miss InterGlobal Nigeria, YALI Network OYO, RecycleGarb, RaveTv, U-recycle Initiative Nigeria, Recycla Ng, News Agency Of Nigeria(NAN), Ibadan North Local Government.

Representatives from all Partner organisations were present Most Notably the representative of the Permanent secretary Lagos State Ministry Of Environment.

HIGH POINTS:

-A recycling Exchange was introduced to the Kube Atenda Community in Ibadan through one of our recycling partners.

-The Head of Estate security and Lekki phase one Bus park chairman promised to continue with the efforts and also encourage park users more on the need to dispose waste responsibly.

-First time volunteers shared their experiences and joy as they said a large percentage if not all of the people around were open and acceptable to the message they shared on environmental responsibility during the advocacy exercise.

-The communities reached have promised to carry on with lessons learnt during the exercise.

-The Lagos State Ministry Of Environment commended and pledged to support more Initiatives that promote environmental well-being.

The three Cleanup & Advocacy events: Cleanup Agodi Gate (Ibadan), Cleanup Ojuelegba (Lagos), Cleanup Lekki (Lagos) were African Cleanup Initiative’s way of reaching out to communities through advocacy and action in commemoration of the World Cleanup Day 2020 in order to promote environmental responsibility among communities in line with its mission of raising environmentally responsible citizens.
